bug-a-licious cookies

Written on August 29th, 2008 by Kim

Bug cookiesWhen I was a little girl, my uncle would bring me M&Ms all the time, and they are still my weakness today. So when I was scouting for bug cookie ideas, these made my mouth water. I only wish I had known about them before my youngest son’s first birthday party. Yes, it was all the buzz… with bumble bees and butterflies.

Here’s how to make these cool cookies from brightideas.com for your next party.

flower pot favors

How fun are these for a bugs & butterflies party or just to give Summer one last hurrah before Fall sets in next month. These are originally from our friends at brightideas.com, but their recipe was a little more complicated than I thought necessary so I’ve paired it down a bit and added a few tips. I hope you’ll try them, they’re actually not as scary as they look and the kids will have a lot of fun helping you in the kitchen (don’t worry about the mess, just focus on the memories).

princess pops

Princess PopsPlaying around in the kitchen this weekend we made princess pops: Oreos dipped in pink chocolate, embellished with a crown outline and packaged in clear cello bags with pink ribbon. These could be a great treat for goody bags or add a name tag and use as your placecard. Here’s how you can make some for your princess.

after school “happies”

Written on August 21st, 2008 by Kim

BrownieMy little one being nervous about his first day made me start thinking about after school treats or “happies” as my family calls them. When I was a kid there was nothing better than coming home to a little surprise, even of the smallest kind, often a coloring book or a pack of stickers carefully arranged on my bed. Even the smallest gesture can make them smile and let them know we’re thinking of them.

My guy is a huge chocolate fan and brownies do just the trick. I go the easy route with a box mix, but you can really add a lot of fun with MMs, peanut butter chips or mint chips. Mix it up and make them smile when they get off the bus. (And if the thought of baking in the middle of the week gives you hives, store bought makes them smile just the same.)

the “very first day” of school

Written on August 20th, 2008 by Kim

Back to SchoolMy oldest is starting pre-school today… and I’m simply not ready. He has the backpack, the new shoes, and the butterflies. I know I can’t follow him around in this life everywhere he goes forever, but I would like to for just a little while longer. For all you moms (and dads) out there struggling with the “very first day”… the little tears will get you and the “I’m scared” looks will make you weak in the knees, but he or she will survive. Just make sure you’re there to pick them up on time (early is even better) and treasure these moments because soon enough they won’t acknowledge you, much less speak to you, in public.
