treasure chest cake

Written on September 8th, 2008 by Kim

Treasure Chest CakeI was originally going to make a simple cupcake tier with pirate flags a flying, but after a little pressure from my mom to make something more fun, we created a treasure chest cake using two store bought pound cakes. Using the bottomĀ 3/4 of one and the top 1/2 of another, I iced both layers with chocolate icing and then simply embellished it with candy rings, necklaces, fruit chews and Twizzlers for the chest outlines. To help cover the board, I crushed a package of graham crackers and sprinkled them around the edges. My son thought it was fabulous and my guests thought it was tasty. What more could you ask (although I thought I could have done a better job with more planning). (Tip: To get height under the chest lid, I used Oreo cookies between layers.)

My oldest is celebrating his fourth birthday this week and we’re hosting a swashbuckling pirate party. I thought I would share a few of the baking ideas I’ve got cooking.

The first is a crispy pirate pop. These will not only be in the goody baskets we’re giving to his buddies, we’re also taking them to his preschool class on Friday. Here are the ingredients, a tools list and simple steps on how to make them for your matey!
