guest on Daytime Columbus

Gail Hogan from NBC’s Daytime Columbus has asked us back and this time we’re channeling our inner princess. Since the cake can be the most expensive part of your planning if you go to a bakery and the most stressful if you try to make it yourself, we decided to demonstrate how to pull off a beautiful fairytale princess castle without even mentioning the word fondant.

This craft will focus on embellishing a three tier cake plate design with pink chocolate covered sugar cone towers, magic wands and scalloped edges.

If you’re in the Columbus Ohio area, please join us at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday January 21, 2009, on NBC. And if you’re not, no worries. We plan to post the video here on our blog by Friday.

Not only are they cute, but they’re a very economical way to decorate and pull your theme into your table. Plus, they can be a delicious goody bag surprise. Visit my post on flooding cookies for tips on how to pull off this icing. It’s much easier than you might think, especially with the right instruction. {wink}

twist on the placecard

Chair placecardI love this idea from Southern Weddings magazine. We always put the placecard in the same place. Makes perfect sense; it goes on the table. Right? Well it doesn’t have to. This idea is perfect when you’re having a gathering:

  • with more than one table,
  • where everyone knows each another already, or
  • when you have limited space for each place setting.

Think outside, or in this case off, the table.

cowboy’s (saw) horse

Cowboy Sawhorse EntranceWe love this idea so much (and again from mommawants1more on flickr; yes, I’m a fan) that I’ll likely use it for my own son’s birthday this summer. We firmly believe that fun invitations are the beginning to getting your guests excited about attending your bash (see our wild west invites and decor), but don’t stop there. This extra fun idea gets the kids excited as soon as they arrive. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Lumber
  • Sawhorse joints
  • Black paint
  • Bandanas
  • Straw or cowboy hats
  • Hula skirt/long straw
  • Hay/straw cubes
  • Letter template

And here are a few easy steps:

1.       Break out the hammer and create a standard sawhorse using joints. Then add a head as shown in the image, rounding the ends like nostrils.

2.       Paint signs using a letter template. These say “Fixin’s” and “Saloon.”

3.       Using a grass hula skirt, hot glue a tail on your horses and trim another short for the mane.

4.       Attach your signs to a piece of lumber and hammer into the ground using the hay to secure it into place.

5.       Finally add the bandanas and hats to your horses and your entry way is complete.

We love to see and share fun ideas. Please share by posting a comment or sending an e-mail to customercare@celebrationshoppe.com if you have images. (By submitting you’re giving us approval to share with our readers, and of course giving you credit.)
