With the dog days of summer upon us, it seems fitting to be thinking about all of the fun things that we want to do over the next few months. Maybe you’ve seen everyone posting their Summer Bucket Lists lately? I know I have, and it inspired me to come up with a cute way for our family to keep track of our Summer Bucket List goals.
The kids and I sat down and they came up with a list of things that they really wanted to do. Some of them were pretty easy (like “Draw”), and “Play Outside” actually made the list twice. A few of them are going to take a little bit of planning on my part, but that’s what makes a bucket list so much fun right?
This chalkboard canvas is a super easy project that can be made into a fun group project by having the canvases prepped and painted ahead of time. Here are the easy how to steps:
The first thing you’ll want to do is give your canvas two coats of chalkboard paint (I used Martha Stewart’s multi-surface chalkboard paint), allowing an hour between coats for drying. Since you’re starting with a black canvas it will cover very nicely! If you can’t get your hands on a black canvas and you end up with a white one, I would still suggest starting with two coats. If you feel like it hasn’t covered well enough, then give it another coat… that should do the trick.
Now you’re ready to stencil! Doesn’t that look so nice?
I’m using a couple different kinds of stencils that I have on hand. One is a cardboard stencil from Handmade Charlotte and the other is an adhesive stencil from Martha Stewart. I just chose a couple of designs that I thought would be fun for our Summer Bucket List and started painting…
Have fun decorating your canvas. With all of the great stencils that are out right now it’s easy to come up with something that fits your family’s style. Add as much or as little as you want! I tend to like to keep things simple, so I don’t like to add too much. I do love that little anchor with the bubbles coming up off of it though, don’t you? It makes me think of being out on the water.
Don’t forget to prime your chalkboard before you use it. You do this simply by scribbling all over with some chalk and then wiping it off.
All that’s left to do is to fill in the blanks! Have fun thinking of things that you might not ordinarily do during the non-summer months. For us Mammoth Cave is a fun day trip idea. None of us have been there and it’s only a little over an hour from our home. What an adventure!
What do you think you’ll put on your Summer Bucket List? Have you already made one? I’d love to know what adventures await your family this summer.
