How To Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Want a little inexpensive summer fun for the kiddos?! For the Summer Issue of All You magazine I contributed an article sharing How To Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint.

It’s super easy to whip up and cleans up easily with rain or the hose!

The recipe is a 1 to 1 ratio, but for simplicity we’ll use 1 cup. You’ll need:

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • food coloring (pastels are achieved with a drop or two, primary colors will need 5 or 6 drops)
  • plastic bowls or cups
  • paint brushes

Mix cornstarch and water together until smooth. Divide and add food coloring until you reach your desired colors.

It’s that simple and it cleans up in a snap! So let your little Picassos go and have a bit of summer fun!

Talking Creative and Themed Easter Baskets with JoAnn & Fox28

I did a TV segment on Good Day Columbus yesterday with Marshall and Shawn from Fox 28 sharing tips and ideas for creative and budget-friendly Easter baskets from JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores. Check it out and watch for the flying candy Easter eggs! {grin}

I created four themed Easter baskets (all items, even the baskets were from JoAnn Fabric & Craft Stores): science basket, baker’s basket, crafter’s basket and a gardener’s basket. I think the gardener’s basket was my favorite.

I hope you’ll watch for all the details (no giggling please) and tune back in tomorrow for better pictures of the gardener’s basket I created for my mom!

Press: Excited To Be Part Of The JoAnn Spring Trends & Ideas LookBook {Inaugrual Issue}

I’ve been so blessed over the past year-and-a-half to work with the amazing team at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores and I’m thrilled to say this latest installment makes me so very proud. Introducing the JoAnn Spring LookBook!

Kim Byers Featured in JoAnn Spring 2014 Trends and Ideas LookBook

The amazing team at JoAnn asked myself and three other bloggers to come up with five craft projects for five Spring trends: Romantic, Batik, Dazzling Blue, Metallic and Summer Celebration.

This project was so much fun and I can’t wait to post each of my five projects over the next few weeks.

Until then, click and browse through the pages of the inaugural issue, pick up a copy at your local JoAnn store, watch for them on their social media, or search by my name, Kim Byers, on JoAnn.com. Yep! I’m now a searchable item on JoAnn.com. {giddy}

Missed the other projects I’ve done with JoAnn? Here are a few:

stamped gift wrap {featured in All You magazine}

Giddy to share I’m featured in the December issue of All You magazine!

DIY Gift Wrap | TheCelebrationShoppe.com

All You magazine editors asked if I’d like to participate in their Take This, Make That article for December. The challenge was to take an average wine cork, create a craft using it, and do NOT spend more than $5.

Crafting is super easy, crafting for less than $5 is the challenge! I chose to create pretty Christmas gift wrap with a few things. To make my Cork Stamp Gift Wrap, you’ll need:

  • Kraft wrapping paper, $2.49
  • Cork, $0.00 (upcycled)
  • Paint, $0.50 per color
  • Glitter, $.99
  • Tools – Xacto knife, scissors and tape
  • Optional embellishments – twine, ribbon, bells

How to make:

  1. Wrap gifts with brown or white Kraft paper
  2. For snowflake design, cut four small triangles out of end of cork with an Xacto knife. For dot design, not cutting required
  3. Dip cork in paint, blotting off excess, and make pattern on Kraft paper
  4. Sprinkle design with glitter and tap off excess
  5. Allow paint to dry and embellish with twine, ribbons, bells, etc.

Crafting time: 10 minutes plus drying time

The holidays are such a magical time, and can also be a hectic time. Projects like this one, help me bring the family together, slow down, and get creative. The result is a gift with a more personal touch and something the kids can brag about.

rustic winter wonderland Christmas mantel {HGTV’s Holiday House blogger challenge}

Rustic Winter Wonderland Christmas Mantel for HGTV Holiday Home | Created by Kim Byers of TheCelebrationShoppe.com

I’m so thrilled to finally share that I was blessed with the opportunity to design a Christmas mantel for this year’s HGTV Holiday HouseI have to tell you, when I got the news, I was like a little kid. I mean HGTV. Yay! But then the Holiday House. Oh my! My knees went wiggly. {grin}

This was a blogger challenge sponsored by JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores (you may remember, I was JoAnn’s craft influencer earlier this year and made a few Creativity Made Simple videos with them) and HGTV. They asked myself and four other amazing bloggers to get crafty and create a Christmas mantel for a rustic home. We could do anything we wanted!

I had a million ideas, but the real challenge was that this was all in July. Yep. I took down my patriotic decorations for the weekend and recreated my idea of a winter wonderland in our living room. My kiddos were running around me in swimsuits and eating popsicles and I was listening to Christmas music. What?! No judging. I had to get in the spirit! {wink}

I created six easy DIY ideas for my mantel:
  1. JOY letters wrapped in icicle white wool,
  2. To The World ball, to complete the statement,
  3. kraft Christmas gift boxes embellished with pinecones and wool,
  4. burlap ruffle ribbon garland,
  5. cabin snow globe, and
  6. spoon trees. (Yes! You read that right.)

You can find all the easy how to steps on HGTV’s Made + Remade and you can shop all the supplies at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores!

And if you’re not crafting Christmas right now, I’d love for you to hop over anyway. You can view all five designs and vote for your favorite between now and October 14. And if you feel like leaving a little comment love over there, I’d really appreciate that too! {Love you guys! You all are what keep me going each day!}

behind the scenes with JoAnn

Kim Byers

Today I’m sharing a bit about a project I’m working on with the amazing team at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores.

JoAnn is talking Creativity Made Simple. It’s all about finding the time do what you love when life gets busy.

As part of Creativity Made Simple, JoAnn has selected one crafter to feature each month all year long. And they asked me to be their May craft influencer! {Yep, that’s my face on the homepage of the Creativity Made Simple!} I couldn’t be more honored.

You see, when I was still in my corporate career I would escape to JoAnns and a book store (located just next to my office) for a long lunch break to dream of starting my own company and to browse the isles for all the crafty things I was going to get into on the weekend. And to have such an amazing brand ask me to be a craft influencer only five short years later… well let’s just say that I feel incredibly blessed!

So as part of my role as craft influencer for the month of May, I created a new circus party idea for JoAnn. As well shot three videos showcasing easy ideas to help viewers craft their way to a fabulous party! Over the next few days I’ll be sharing the videos and more! {giddy}

Kim Byers

In the meantime, here’s a peek at the behind the scenes of my video shoots!

The JoAnn team was not only kind, professional and super helpful, they were also a riot. If only I had some of my out-takes to share with you. Oh the faces I made when I messed up! {smirk}

Kim Byers

For those of you that follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen these before. And if you don’t, I’d love for you to join me. I’m under “The Celebration Shoppe.”

Much more coming about my projects and videos with JoAnn and Creativity Made Simple. Until then, and as always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

Happy Thursday!

Bloggy Boot Camp recap

Bloggy Boot Camp

Good morning everyone! What a weekend! I had the opportunity to speak at Bloggy Boot Camp Business Edition in Phoenix this weekend.

There is something about being in the room with so many smart, driven, like-minded women (not to leave you boys out!), that just gets you energized.

This event is completely and totally focused on business. From working with brands and PR professionals to building your own brand to understanding the business of social media and blogging to how to navigate copyright and the law of sponsored posts.

It is just packed with information and when I say packed… I really mean it. There was barely a bathroom break! Gracious! But let’s face it, when you’re spending money on a ticket, who needs a break! {grin}

Another thing I really like about the way Tiffany and Francesca, aka the SITS Girls, run this event, they give you assigned seating that rotates between almost every speaker so you get to meet everyone. No staying in the comfort zone of only talking to your friends. At Bloggy Boot Camp you meet everyone! And isn’t that what we all truly want?! To make new friends, new connections, get new opportunities. It’s pure genius!

I personally had the opportunity to meet so many lovely women. Some I’ve chatted with on Instagram or shared a tweet with, others I’d not had the chance to ever meet but now I’m popping over to their blogs to see what they’re all about.

The next Bloggy Boot Camp Business Edition is in Dallas this November. If you’re interested in taking your blog to the next level, you can find more details over on SITS Girls.

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate. Oh, and if you want, earn money doing it!

By the way, if you can’t make a Bloggy Boot Camp this year I highly recommend you take Laurie Turk’s Mom Blog to Money Blog. It is so worth the money. 30 days of activities, 16 checklists, 17 how to videos.
