kid craft: red bird handprint art

My boys crafted red bird handprint art canvases for their grandmothers this Christmas. Aren’t they fun?! The perfect kid art activity!

And you should have heard the responses. What mom, grandmother, dad, grandpa doesn’t want handprint art gifts from their little ones? Well none in my family and I’m obsessed a bit with capturing their little hands anyway before they get any bigger.

Just imagine your little person’s hand smothered in paint… okay and maybe their little bottoms buckled to the chair {smirk}… but the outcome is adorable.

My mom’s absolute favorite is the cardinal bird. Here in Ohio I see them everyday in my backyard. Such beautiful birds!

But you know, these handprint red birds (or any color) would be perfect for kid crafted Mother’s Day gifts too… just saying!

By the way, I did so many crafts over the holidays that I really wanted to share and just ran out of time. So if you see a Christmas craft here in July don’t judge…

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own red bird handprint art canvases:

  • Kids… it’s just not as cute if it’s your hand. {grin}
  • White canvas (you can get a 8×10 for about $7 at your local craft store)
  • Paint colors: red, brown, black, yellow and silver (if you want snowflakes)
  • Paint brushes
  • Optional: Martha Stewart Snowflake Punch to make a stencil

Easy how to steps to make your own red bird handprint art:

  • Paint your child’s hand with red paint, making sure to get in any creases.
  • Apply to canvas quickly, lightly pushing on their hand to make sure all areas touch the canvas. (Wash little one’s hand… like you need me to tell you!)
  • Using black, let your child paint on legs and a dot for the eye.
  • Using brown, let your child paint whispy tree branches.
  • Using yellow, let your child paint a triangle for the beak.
  • Using silver, let your child stencil on a snowflake using the template you made from the punch.
  • Sign it! Let your kiddos write their name at the end of the wing tip and don’t forget the year.
  •  Tip: Let the canvas dry a few minutes in between each color/application if your child’s hand might brush wet paint. The canvas isn’t very forgiving.

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

handprint Christmas ornament with PBK

Since my kids were itty bitty I’ve shopped at Pottery Barn Kids each Christmas for keepsake ornaments for our tree. And now it’s covered in red oval and square picture frame ornaments and the happy little faces of my babies. And this year I’m adding this lovely white handprint ornament!

I’m a bit obsessed with their feet and hands. Since they’re now six and eight, I guess I just feel my time is running out and I have to capture them every chance I get. (This is our Christmas tree footprint art from last year and I have plans for their feet this year too!)

So this marshmallow clay handprint ornament from Pottery Barn Kids was perfect to add to my ever growing collection of keepsake ornaments!

And the best part, since my children are older they could help make the ornament from beginning to end, making it even more special. Plus, it’s a mess-free craft. No plaster powder to mix and if you mess up you just roll the clay again until you get it perfect.

The Pottery Barn Kids Keepsake Handprint Ornament kit comes with pure white marshmallow clay, a rolling pin, two sizes of round mold cutters (hand and foot… I used the foot size for my boys’ hands), a hole punch and a ribbon.

And with the left over marshmallow clay, we got creative. He made a snowman…

and then we broke out the Sharpies, so I could write the year on his print, and he could draw a picture on his clay. It started as a sun and turned into a sunflower. As a mommy, I thought it was adorable. Even the dots of black permanent pen he got on his nose and lip while drawing… {grin}.

You can find keepsake ornaments, perfect for baby shower gifts too, at Pottery Barn Kids ~ find a PBK store or shop PBK ornaments online.

Polar Express party + free printables

So I’m a bit giddy this morning. We’re taking the boys to ride the Polar Express (a real train with hot cocoa and everything… eeek!) tonight. My sweet mom even made the boys new (so handsome) pajamas with white piping and monograms. And I have my little one’s chocolate soy milk packed so he can have hot cocoa with all the other kids… it’s going to be fabulous!

And in honor of our little trip, I thought I would share a few Polar Express party ideas and some free Polar Express party printables so you can create your own fun, even if it’s just for you and the kids to watch the Polar Express movie in front of the fire… which we did last night. {grin}

So first, this sweet Polar Express birthday party was hosted and photographed by Patty K Photography for her son. I love the Polar Express train centerpiece on snow, the authentic tickets and of course, the photography! Very fun. And these pics are just a little snippet of the big day she created. You have to pop over to her blog to see the cups and all the goodies she baked. Lovely!

And if you want to put together a little fun yourself yet this season, Jamie of The Crafting Chicks created these Free Printable Polar Express Tickets ~ The Bell Still Rings For Those Who Truly Believe. These would be great tied to jingle bells… to see if your kiddos still BELIEVE!

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate! Happy Tuesday everyone!

DIY elf on the shelf bow tie tutorial

Hi everyone! It’s Deanna of Mirabelle Creations sharing a little holiday magic this morning. {grin}

At our house, the kids count down to the arrival of Freddie, our Elf on the Shelf. They are just as excited for his arrival on Thanksgiving weekend as they are for a visit from Santa. The first thing they do every morning is see where he has landed after his overnight flight back to the North Pole.

I’ve secretly always been a little jealous of my nieces’ elf, Buddy, because she has a kicky little skirt. The skirt is white with little red snowflakes and has a decidedly retro-cool vibe.

Being the proper gentleman that he is, our elf, Freddie, needed a little haberdashery to reflect his traditional style too. So, I created a few bowties for Freddie to add to his wardrobe.

The three looks included a gingham bowtie to represent his authentic Southern style, a Kentucky blue bowtie to sport on UK game days, and a polka dot bowtie in holiday colors for those festive holiday events. The first day we left out the bowties for Freddie, he landed the next morning in front of our dining room mirror so he could check out his new fabulous look!

Here’s a list of what you’ll need to make your own Elf on the Shelf bow tie:

  • 3/8” ribbon
  • needle & thread
  • fabric glue
  • sticky back velcro
  • iron

And the easy how to make a elf bow tie steps:

  1. Cut three pieces of ribbon in the following lengths: 2 ¼”, 1 ½”, 4 ½”
  2. For the 2 ¼” piece, make a loop with the ends slightly overlapping. With the overlapping portion in the center, pinch the center to create a bow with a crease in the middle. Sew together the ribbon from front to back, then top to bottom to secure the bow.
  3. Fold the 1 ½” ribbon in half, lengthwise. Add a small amount of fabric glue down the center, then iron the fold.
  4. Repeat Step 3 with the 4 ½” piece of ribbon. This is the portion that goes around the neck of the Elf.
  5. Center the bow portion with the 4 ½” long neck portion. Sew the bow onto the neck portion.
  6. Wrap the 1 ½” piece around the center of the bow and neck portion, to cover the stitches you made. Stich the 1 ½” to the back of the bow, cut off any overlapping portion.
  7. Cut one small piece of Velcro ¼” wide. Stick Velcro to the ends of the 4 ½” piece.
