Upcycle: Easy Hanging Container Garden

When I was a child my grandparents had a garden. It seemed everyone did. And they ate from the garden all year. Fresh in the summer and frozen fresh in the winter months. Everything was organic. {wink}

While this post is part of a sponsored campaign by Unilever Project Sunlight, all opinions and experiences expressed are entirely my own. You know I’d have it no other way!

Now we all have smaller yards, live in neighborhoods, high-rises, condos… so the opportunity for having a garden is a bit more challenging. But it is possible no matter what kind of space you have.

In November of last year, Unilever, one of the world’s leading suppliers of food, home and personal care products, launched Unilever Project Sunlight, a long-term initiative to motivate people to live sustainably by inspiring them to create a brighter future for children. The project aims to create a growing community of people who believe it is possible to build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably, without compromising the needs of future generations. Have you seen the video of the kids? It’s seriously inspiring and a great way to talk to your kids about our future.

How To Make A Hanging Planter | Kim Byers, TheCelebrationShoppe.com

So today I’m sharing an easy way to make a hanging jar planter by upcycling those everyday items. Like Hellmman’s Real Mayonnaise jars! You’ll need:

  • Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise Jars
  • Twine
  • Pebbles (for drainage and you can also drill some small holes in the bottom of the plastic jars, you don’t want root rot)
  • Soil
  • Plants
  • Labels

See how simple it is to make this planter!

I had my boys help with this upcycle project. I don’t want the art of personal gardens to be lost in my family. Yes, the grocery or the farmer’s market is easier, but personally I think there is something therapeutic in watching something grow. And what kid doesn’t like to get their hands dirty. Am I right?!

To make these hang with twine is simple.

  1. Wrap twine twice around the lip of the jar and tie loosely. You’ll tighten later.
  2. Take a length of twine and weave it under the twine around the lip. Tie each end on opposite side. Make sure they’re equal for balance.
  3. Tighten the twine around the lip and secure.

I’m Getting Organized {Technically Speaking} for 2014

I love technology. I also love pretty papers. I know… it’s a problem.

In 2014 I’m not giving up my pretty papers, or my crazy sticky notes all together, but I am committed to getting a bit more organized electronically. We moms and business owners are constantly on the go and since I can’t take everything with me when I travel, or to the car pool line, or while I wait at the doctor’s office… I need to use what I do take with me everywhere I go more.

These are a few of the basics that are going to help me get there!

Getting Organized, Technically Speaking with Kim Byers

  1. iPad – First of all, my sweet mom gave me a new iPad 4 as a surprise Christmas gift. I was totally shocked. She’s so sneaky.
  2. Snugg iPad case – these cases are classy and a perfect fit! I mean perfect! I feel professional when I walk into a meeting and it feels comfortable in my hands. Plus, I can swap my silver/gray (which I LOVE!) out for a “fun” color when the mood strikes. {wink}
  3. Awesome Note – I’ve searched high and low and tested many… many… many {sigh} productivity apps. None had all the items I needed. To do lists, notes for projects, pictures and drawing (because sometimes I just like to sketch an idea down). This app allows me to do all those things on my iPad and on my iPhone. In my opinion, it is truly awesome!
  4. Studio 53 app – for all my creative wants and needs with endless paper and separate journals for each idea if I have… which is a ton. {grin}

I’m testing a few more things and if they prove to really help me stay organized and on task, I’ll share them with you. I wish you all a happy, healthy and PRODUCTIVE 2014!
