I showcased a few ocean party ideas from Family Fun magazine in yesterday’s post. Today I’m sharing a few more for the royal princess living in your midst.
This first one, a beautiful shell crown, is a must for any mermaid princess. You’ll need:
- Heavy cardstock large enough to encircle your child’s head
- Tiara or crown template available at FamilyFun.com/magazine
- Small shells (large shells will be too heavy and weight down the craft paper)
- Tacky glue or hot glue
- Sand
- Glitter
And here are the simple steps to make this beautiful crown:
- Using the template provided by Family Fun, draw and trimout the design. (A cutting mat and staight edge would be helpful.)
- Place your shells and then affix them with glue.
- Before the glue drys completely sprinkle on sand and glitter to fill in the open spaces.
- Allow the crown to dry and then secure it into a circle that will fit your child’s head.

This next craft is too adorable and perfect for photo ops. You’ll need:
- Flat bedsheet
- Washable marker
- Nondimensional fabric paint (e.g., DecoArt SoSoft)
- Felt
- Fabric glue
And here are the super simple steps:
- Lay the bedsheet down on a hard flat surface and have your child lie down in the center so that his or her neck lines up with the top edge.
- Using the washable marker, trace the child’s body and then sketch the design on top of the outline. (See the mermaid in the upper right corner.)
- Now use the fabric paint to create your mermaid.
- I’ve added my own twist here. Paint the mermaid tail, but then embellish it with glitter felt (the craft store usually has pink and purle!) scales.
- Hang your sheet on a laundry line to dry and let the magic begin.
- NOTE: Follow the package instructions for setting the paint and laundering the sheet.
Happy crafting!

We just shot our deep blue sea birthday party decor on Saturday and yesterday this month’s issue of Family Fun comes in the mail. (I’ve said this before, but if you’re not a subscriber and you love this kind of stuff you really should be.) To my happy surprise it was chalked full of brilliant under water party ideas.
The clam shell cookie idea is a pearl of wisdom. {wink} All you’ll need are some round wafer cookies, pink tinted icing, yogurt covered peanuts or raisens and then a dab of white icing and black food coloring for the eyes.

Next check out this very fun craft idea. All the kids will love making these during your bash. You’ll need (for one):
- 18 ounce beverage container
- 10 shells per container
- 1/4 cup sand
- Green and blue food coloring
- Silver glitter
- Water
- Mineral or baby oil
- Hot glue gun
And here are the super simple steps:
- Pour sand and shells into clean bottle.
- Mix a drop of blue and green food coloring into 6 cups of water, then fill the bottle halfway.
- Add a pinch of glitter.
- Fill the rest of the bottle with oil, leaving a little air space at the top.
- Run a bead of hot glue around the bottle opening and screw the lid on quickly.
Love this idea!! Leave it to Disney to come up with a cool magazine full of ideas all dedicated to making our kids smile.

Whether your thinking about having a splash bash in the backyard or taking a trip to the aquarium, this birthday party theme idea is creative, colorful and lots of fun.
It’s really easy to pull off this table. We offer the plates, napkins, cups, placemats, tablecloths and of course the custom invitations (below), but sorry, we don’t have goldfish. {wink}
As for the crafts and accessories:
- Cake plate - use a die cut machine to cut out waves (or draw one and then make a template) from a heavy bright blue cardstock that can be found at any craft or scrapbooking store. Then with a drop or two of hot glue, affix it to your cake plates and you’re ready to go.
- Placecard - we found these pre-painted wooden fish at the craft store as well and just wrote each child’s name on the top fin with a Sharpie.
- Table aquarium - we visited the pet store and found a fish that could easily live in a vase with a few drops of DeChlor (removes chlorine). We then simply embellished the square vase with our wave die cuts.
- Fish placemat - our placemats are rectangle so we made a fish template and trimmed out our shape. It’s easy and fast, but makes a real impact to the table.

We hope you have a splash!

It’s no secret that I love our new deep sea birthday party theme. While scouting for some fun cupcake and cake ideas for an upcoming family birthday party I came across these two. Not only are both of these ideas adorable, but both can be executed fairly easily {stop that… they really can be; trust me}.
The beach theme cake and cupcakes are from pink apron {super cute!}. I don’t know if these were, but if you were to take on this idea, the cake and cupcakes could be purchased from a bakery an then it’s all about icing the cookies. Read my post on flooding cookies for some easy tips.
This octopus cupcake from two part sugar’s is too fun; I will definatley be making a version of this. It is fondant and I know that scares some people but don’t let it. You can buy pre-made fondant at your local craft store or bakery supply store. Make sure you tint it with gel food coloring, the other stuff will make it watery. As for the mechanics of it, the head is just a rolled ball and the legs can easily be rolled in your hands. It might take a few trys, but I have confidence any of you can pull it off. {wink}

I’m like a proud momma when it comes to our invitation designs and the décor we’ve chosen to coordinate with each. And just like a momma, I don’t have favorites… but I can have an “oh you’re just too cute today.” Right? {giggle}
So if you’re looking for some fishy fun, grab your snorkel and dive in to this bright and fun ocean birthday party theme. The invite is ours, of course. {wink} You can have a closer look at the invite, thank you, wave plates and more by visiting our “deep sea” birthday party theme in our shoppe.
The cupcakes are ours too. We simply tinted our icing an ocean blue and whipped it on with a spatula for a little wave effect. As for the embellishment, we cut out wave shapes from a blue cardstock to made a cupcake wrapper. As for the life preserver, we used a cirlce gum drop and piped on the stripes with the flat side of a #47 icing tip. Too cute huh!
And last but not least, the cake pan is from William-Sonoma. Love how they used Smarties as the suckers on the tentacles.
Happy planning.
