pink ombre cake & happy 60th birthday Mom!

Simple Pink Ombre Cake | TheCelebrationShoppe.com

My sweet mom turned 60 this week!

My boys decorated a breakfast for her. Lots of streamers and pink… pink everywhere. She loved it. {grin}

60th Birthday Party | TheCelebrationShoppe.com

For her cake I tried my hand at making my first ombre cake. It was a simple one, but I think it turned out pretty!

To ice a simple pink ombre cake, you’ll need:

  • Your favorite homemade buttercream icing
  • Pink gel food coloring
  • Three bowls
  • Pink rock candy
  • Optional: Wax paper

How to ice an ombre cake:

  1. Starting with a chilled two layer cake that already has a white crumb coat.
  2. Divide your icing into three bowls.
  3. Add one drop of gel food coloring to one bowl, two drops to another and three to another. Go light on the drops. It will get dark quickly.
  4. Apply your darkest icing to the bottom, about an inch tall.
  5. Apply the middle color to the middle, again, about an inch tall.
  6. Apply the lightest color to the top inch and top of cake.
  7. Crumble rock candy (if on sticks, crush inside plastic on cutting board), and sprinkle around edge of cake.

Bakers tip: Using small 3×3 pieces of wax paper, slip them under your cake on your cake plate, before icing your cake. This helps keep the cake plate clean. Just slip them out once you’re done and touch up your icing near the base if needed.

We also whipped up a quick glitter number cake topper.

You’ll need:

  • Printed numbers (just open Word, type your numbers in the point size and color you desire) on cardstock paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue (liquid is fine, but put it on your finger, not the paper, to apply)
  • Glitter
  • Lollipop stick
  • Hot glue

Easy steps:

  1. Cut out the numbers.
  2. Apply glue (with your finger if liquid, otherwise your paper will get too wet).
  3. Sprinkle on the glitter (over a sheet of paper if you want to save excess).
  4. Hot glue numbers to lollipop sticks.

create the perfect study spot

Back to School Study Spot | curated by thecelebrationshoppe.com

Now that school is starting up all across the country we moms are looking for creative ways to get the kids to do their homework or study for a test without us having to ask… like a million times. {smirk}

For our family, it’s all about creating the perfect study spot. Something that is uniquely your child. Everyone learns differently and the key is finding what they consider comfortable. Some kids want a desk with all the organization. And some kids want to snuggle up and work off their lap. I’ve collected ideas for both!

Take my oldest, he fell in LOVE with this waffle chair during a recent visit to Target so I chose to use it as a starting point for boys and went a more classic route for girls. Again though, it’s all about the individual child. Some boys will want a desk and some girls will prefer a lap desk.

So here we go!

Study spot ideas for the organized girl:

  1. Polka dot desk accessories from PB Teen
  2. Wire lamp (I suggest using a day light bulb, dim light and studying equals sleeping in my house) from Target
  3. Insulated chevron mug from Target (perfect for coffee if they’re old enough OR hot chocolate!!!)
  4. White Braxton desk (with lots of storage) from Target
  5. Chevron desk chair from Target
  6. Cork monogram initial (for all her pictures and notes) from Target

Study spot ideas for the laid back boy:

  1. Waffle chair from Target
  2. Camo lap desk with built in storage from PB Teen
  3. Mini cooler from PB Teen
  4. Music wall decal from Amazon

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

introducing Amelia + a harvest party

Introducing Amelia Marie Design

I’m thrilled to introduce you to Amelia of Amelia Marie Design! She will be contributing her talents here on The Celebration Shoppe once or twice a month. Her first contributing post is a beautiful peach harvest party near her home. A perfect venue for a bridal shower or baby shower.

In her words…

Peach Harvest Party

In celebration of the local peach harvest, and August being national peach month, Amelia Marie Design produced, and hosted a sunset dinner for a small group of friends. Surrounded by fruit laden trees, a farmhouse table offered fresh and local eats, including Peach jam, Olive Artisan loaf, fresh garden salad, an assorted cheeses board, and lattice peach pie.

Homegrown flowers and fresh peaches accompanied the beautiful spread, adding a burst of vibrant colors.  The dinner guests, four friends who have shared a special bond since childhood, laughed and reminisced as the evening lingered on.

Photography Conference

Hey ladies! Okay, I’m giddy. I’m heading to this year’s I Heart Faces Photography Conference for Women! Woo Hoo!

It’s going to be amazing! It’s this October in Ohio. For those of you know me, you know I live in Ohio so I want to be the first to tell you that the change of seasons here is an amazing burst of color! It’s total eye candy for photographers.

And I’ve known Amy and Angie, the co-founders of I Heart Faces, for years. They are both amazing photography talents, but not only that, they’re smart business women. If you want to take your photography skills (I know I do!) or your photography business to the next level, join us!

As you can tell from this video, the conference is covering a multitude of topics. You’ll find amazing speakers and teachers, creative entrepreneur business sessions, hands-on camera lessons, photo editing, specialty workshops, a photo walk and oh yeah, a opening night party!

There is a ton more detail about this year’s conference on I Heart Faces including details about each workshop and the guided tour of Amish Country that is open to the public (those not attending the conference).

If you come, please find me. I’d love to meet you in person! And if you can’t come this year, make sure you stop over at the I Heart Faces website for regular photography tips and challenges. I swear I learn something new from there every single week.

10 must haves for tailgating & football

Tailgate Party Tips and Ideas | thecelebrationshoppe.com

Believe it or not… it’s almost that time. Yep. Time to cart the kids to football practice and plan your first tailgate party of the year! I know because my son starts flag football practice (he wishes he could tackle… but momma needs baby steps with this sport) next week and my husband has already taken over the family schedule starting the first weekend in September. {smirk}

So as I start planning our tailgating season and dreaming of crisp fall days, I thought I’d share some of my favorite tailgate party finds, as well as some of my “must-haves” for staying organized during football and cheer season.

At the top of this list is my large utility tote from Thirty-One GiftsI use mine for taking all the snacks, extra jackets/blankets (it gets COLD here in Ohio in the fall… especially when we play a 9 a.m. game…), water bottles, equipment and my thermal even fits. It helps keep me organized and I only have to carry one bag! It’s #8 in the roundup above, but mine is (aqua blue like the bag in #10) and has our family name monogrammed in the front. I really wanted the chevron bag… but my boys thought it looked a bit too girly for the games. {grin}

So here we go. If you’re planning a tailgate party, you’ll need:

  • 1. Frozen Drink Blender – this single serve blender available at Amazon is perfect. No more wasting a batch of frozen margaritas!
  • 2. Football Party Supplies – you can download my chevron and football field sheets plus “go team” cupcake wrappers and toppers for FREE!
  • 3. Tailgate Party Games – these ring toss and lawn bowling games are from Front Porch Classics
  • 4. Bar-height Folding Round Tables - nope. I’m not suggesting you have bar stools at your tailgate, just the bar height table. A few of these around the site allows party goers a place to congregate while standing. Plus, I hate bending over to eat messy BBQ! {wink}
  • 5. Wine and dine party plate and cup and plate party plates  - no more balancing act with your plate and your cup or glass of wine. Genius invention for tailgating!
  • 6. Party wagon grill- pull it out and wheel it where ever the party is from Wholesale Patio Store!

And if you carting the kids around to their games, you’ll LOVE to be able to personalize your bag with their name, number, and even a favorite collegiate team logo! I have to admit… I do love a monogram!

  • 7. Cheer moms – the (A) large utility tote with (B) pocket utility tote insert is my fav! Plus, (C) organizing utility tote and (D) lil’ expressions tote are perfect for keeping all your gear. The lil’ expressions tote can be personalized with outfits, hair type and color for boys and girls.
  • 8. Football moms – as I mentioned above, the Large Utility Tote is my fav and as you can see from the image you can make it what you want with dividers and tops. And it all removes easily so you can change it out for other purposes like keeping your groceries from rolling around in the trunk. I so use it for that a lot!
  • 9. Cold drinks – We often spend several hours at the field so we sometimes take lunch. The (A) Thermal Tote and (C) Bring A Bottle Thermal are perfect for drinks and bringing cold snacks for the team.
  • 10. Healthy snacks – The (B) Keep It Caddy is a bit smaller and perfect for all those snacks you know you’ll be taking unless you want to spend your day at the concession stand.

You can shop all of Thirty-One Gifts goodies from their Thirty-One Gifts Catalog  (bottom of the left navigation bar). Just contact a consultant in your area to place your order. And in the month of August 2013 if you spend $35 and get any purse 50% off! You can find their latest deal (a new one every month) here!

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and oh yes, celebrate this football season!

This post was sponsored by Thirty-One Gifts. However, all opinions are my own. You know I’d have it no other way!
