art activities for kids

Looking for art activities for the kids?! When we photographed my art birthday party supplies collection for the store we came up with these kid crafts ~ have the kids make cupcake art with supplies including:

  • cupcake liners (cut in half),
  • tissue paper,
  • pom poms,
  • felt,
  • ribbon and more!

Included in the art party supplies we designed four whimsy frames for the kids to create on: red/blue, orange/yellow, purple/chartreuse and black/white.

We also created “award badges” that you can give to each guest. They say things like most creative, best in show, most artistic, best design, most colorful and best color palette. A great way for every child to feel special. The awards are rectangle tags and then we created the crepe ribbon backer. (You can see how to create a similar idea with our graduation collection.)

And last but not least, here’s a look at the Art Gallery entry sign that is also part of the printable collection. We printed it at Costco for $5.99 and embellished it with yellow crepe paper. Can you tell I’m loving crepe paper lately?! It’s inexpensive, comes in a variety of colors and so simple to manipulate. LOVE.

You can see more details from my Art birthday party supplies collection in the shoppe: Invitation, Thank you notes, Art birthday party supplies (available as sets or you can buy individual items).

And as always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

mother’s day brunch placesetting

Mothers Day Brunch

I’m absolutely giddy for Spring. I’m an early riser so I tend to see the sun come up each morning and this time of year that means I also get to hear the birds chirp the day in. It’s my favorite time of day to just think and be creative.

And those little chirps led me to this Mother’s Day brunch, sweet baby shower, or even Spring party placesetting idea.

I picked up these lovely new Easter dishes from Target. I love how girly they are. I’m the only girl in a house of four so sometimes it needs to be a bit about me. {grin}

The malted milk ball candy eggs make this party placesetting perfect for a baby shower…

Mothers Day Brunch

but I chose to craft little baby birds for a Mothers Day brunch. I just thought how sweet to be able to put the number of babies in the nest that each guest has!

As you can see, I have two little birdies in my nest! {proud momma smile}

How to make a paper blue bird

So here’s how you make these sweet paper bluebirds. You’ll need:

  • Blue cardstock
  • Yellow cardstock
  • Paper trimmer
  • Scissors, small and sharp is best
  • Hot glue
  • Stick glue
  • Optional: Sharpie if you’d like to add eyes

How to make a paper blue bird

And here are the easy steps:

  1. For the mother blue bird, trim strips of scrapbook paper in 2″ (body) and 1 3/4″ (head) strips
  2. Curl the paper slightly by running it through your fingers. If you don’t the paper will crease.
  3. Determine your body circle size (based on your nest and plate) and hot glue the ends together trimming off any excess. Repeat for the head, making it slightly smaller.
  4. Trim an oval out of the yellow scrapbook paper, then trim down the sides to a beak shape.
  5. Attach the beak with glue, not hot glue or it might show.
  6. Perch the bird on the nest with a small dot of hot glue and hold 5 seconds until it sets.

Note: Baby birds strips should be 1″ and 3/4″.

Healthy party snacks

As a mom that owns a party planning company, you might think my kids live on cupcakes and candy bars. Honestly it’s quite the opposite. My kiddos are a bit desensitized to all the snacks that make their way through our kitchen and the studio. Thank goodness!

And as a mom constantly taking snacks to school, hosting holiday parties and play dates, I’m always on the lookout for healthy party snacks. Yummy treats that the kids will enjoy and we moms can still feel good about. That’s why when offered to share Green Giants new Veggie Chips I was all in.

My oldest LOVES anything cheese, so the Green Giant™ Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips were in his tummy before I could blink. I actually had to stop him from eating from the bag so I’d have enough to share a picture with you!

And my youngest, as many of you know, has severe food allergies. So he and I were both excited for him to try the Green Giant™ Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips – Sea Salt Flavor. He gobbled them up too!

Healthy party snacks

And by the way, both are made with real veggies and sweet potatoes! The Green Giant Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips even have 40 percent less fat than regular potato chips. I not only want this for my child, I want it for me! The best part, the kids don’t even realize they’re veggie snacking. And when I told mine, it didn’t change a thing. They still gobbled on!

Want to try them?! Here’s an 85 cents off Veggie Snack Chips coupon!

And for a bit of fun, check out the surprise talents the Green Giant has unearthed. Plus, show the Giant your surprise talent on their Facebook page or see even more surprise talents on the Green Giant YouTube channel!

Raising A Reader with LeapFrog

I’m a reader. I have boys. I want them to be readers… And we all know that boys are less likely to keep reading (when not forced) than girls. That is why I started from the moment they were born. Reading together every night for at least 20 minutes in our house is not only a family tradition/habit, but also a reward.

I actually hate to admit this… but I’m going to just so you can get a feel for how much my boys love to read. If they’re jumping on the bed… not brushing their teeth… giggling so much they can’t breath… I simply threaten “okay, no book tonight!” and they immediately and I do honestly mean immediately, straighten up. And I don’t have toddlers anymore {sad smile}, my oldest is eight! And he reads at a 6th grade level (AR 6.2). Yep. I’m a proud momma.

Now just so you know, not everything we read is a great tale. Nope. I’ve read more science books (even parts of my old college Biology textbook to them… don’t get me started!) about creepy crawly slithery critters, space and electronics, African animals, weather, etc. than I care to name. But they loved it. And… I learned a thing or two right along with them. {grin}

Raise A Reader

My youngest has a particular fascination with dinosaurs, and he has since he was two. (Ever seen his 4th birthday Dinosaur Party? It was featured in Parents magazine!)

Raise A Reader

My point is, read what THEY like. It will keep them interested and eager. My oldest actually got grumpy with me recently when his little brother and I went to the library before we picked him up from school… he told me that just wasn’t fair! {grin}

At this point I feel I have to also tell you that both of my boys are big into sports too. They are energetic and social… and readers! They play baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis, golf and they swim. Yes… I know… we’re honing it down to our favorite sports. I only allow one sport at a time, unless it’s summer, and that is becoming more difficult the older they get. {smirk}

LeapFrog Learning System

Okay, so if you didn’t start reading to your little people from day one. No worries and no shame. OR, if you did and your kiddos are doing great, but you’re looking for something interesting to keep them going (I’m always on the look out for something new to keep them engaged).

Either way, you really should look at the LeapFrog systems to help your children grow as readers. I’m a lover of the hardback book… my kids are growing up in the age of technology… LeapFrog offers a melding of the two complete with reading, spelling, games, science, and more. My son, as you can see, was mesmerized by the Leap and the Lost Dinosaur book and the games inside, especially the Dinosaur Jungle Survivor Game that comes complete with a set of dinosaur fact cards. By the way, did I mention he’s a dinosaur lover. I should have taken a picture of his playroom for you… we have every dinosaur toy sold. Literally.

Oz The Great And Powerful

Wizard of Oz

When I was a kid there was no DVD (no VHS until I was about 9…) and there was no TIVO or record on demand. Needless to say, if you wanted to watch something (on the three channels that we got) you had better plant yourself in front of the television on time. The Wizard of Oz movie, the original from 1939, came on every year and every year I was ready. My mom would make brownies and we made a family night of it. Admittedly, the evil green Wicked Witch of the West creeped me out a bit, but still LOVED the movie.

So you can imagine that I’ve been giddy with anticipation with all the promos and sneak peeks at the new Oz The Great And Powerful movie. Even if the witch creeps me out again, I have to hand it to Disney, the graphics in the trailers are beyond reproach.

And as soon as I see it… which will hopefully be this weekend… I’ll share a mom’s review. I have a six and an eight year old, and I hope it’s okay for the little one. I really want to share it with them! That said, neither of my boys liked the recent Alice in Wonderland or Christmas Carol. I hate to admit it, because Disney is my absolute favorite (movies and destination), but they were both too “dark” for my kiddos’ taste.

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! And if you see the movie, don’t tell me what happens! Since this is the prequel to the original story, I’m anticipating the story line… and maybe a few fun birthday party ideas. {wink}

rainbow sprinkles slumber party ideas

teenage party ideas

Deanna from Mirabelle Creations here, and I’m so excited to share my daughter Mira’s 10th birthday party with you.  For her party, Mira wanted to have a small slumber party with her five closest friends.  Additionally, when we started discussing themes, she didn’t want an over the top, all-out theme.  (Teenage, or in this case, ten-ager, birthday party ideas are hard.) Mira has always loved rainbow sprinkles.  In fact, it’s the only ice cream topping she likes.  Also, she loves having breakfast for dinner, so we decided to host a Sprinkles “Brinner” (brunch for dinner).

Rainbow Birthday Flowers

Instead of sharing all the little details of the party (you can read more about them on my blog), I wanted to share what made this a special tween party.

I have always believed in the power of creating meaningful party details to celebrate the guest of honor.  But, for tween girls, it’s crucial to also celebrate and encourage everyone at the party.  Tween years can sometimes be trying.  It’s tough finding your place in the world and a group of friends that celebrate you.  During this time, tweens are trying to figure out their values and beliefs.  Their experiences during these formative years will contribute to the teens and young women they become.

So, here are a couple of tips to make a tween or teen birthday party special for all the girls:

  1. Create a special space:  During the party, the girls sat at a table specially decorated just for them.  They were so excited to see their special space and all the fun décor we made just for them.  They ate their dinner there, then returned to the same spots for cake, and for breakfast the next morning.
  2. Include one activity to build encouragement:  While the girls were eating Brinner, I encouraged them to each write a positive statement about everyone else sitting at the table on pieces of the circle cardstock that decorated the middle of the table.  OH MY GOODNESS!  I never imagined what a wonderful moment it would be for all of them.  Not only did they write beautiful statements about each other, but they also read aloud all of the affirmations.  That led to them engaging in a lengthy discussion about all the things they loved about each other.
  3. Give them choices:  Of course, my daughter had many ideas about what she wanted me to incorporate in her party.  But, I also intentionally gave the other girls choices to make during the party.  Allowing girls to make choices empowers them to believe in their own wisdom.  One simple way I incorporated this idea was setting up a Yogurt Bar where they could choose to build their own parfait.  Additionally, one activity they enjoyed was painting their own canvas.  While the girls were painting, I overheard the girls praise each other’s paintings.  These were simple ideas to plan, but were both confidence-building activities.
  4. Limit technology:  By foregoing a movie and keeping the television off for the evening, the girls were able to role play and just talk with one another.  They developed some elaborate scenario where they were all pretend sisters who also happened to be famous singers.  They spent hours role playing and giggling!

Yogurt Bar

All the gorgeous décor and desserts make for a beautiful party.  I live for and dream about all the little beautiful details for parties.  But, what I truly loved about this party was creating a space where my daughter and her tween friends could be encouraged and empowered to be their own person!

Rainbow Party Favors

You can find me and more details about my sweet girl’s slumber birthday party, including how to create the chalkboard signage on our yogurt table and how to make these sprinkle rings as party favors, on my blog at Mirabelle Creations.

easy football brownie finger food recipe

Easy Football Party Brownies

Hosting a party this Game Day?! Make these football brownies. They’re super easy, fun and you’ll look like a superstar. It’s a win – win… no matter who wins. {grin}

For this little finger food recipe, you’ll need:

  • Brownie box recipe (I use Duncan Hines Chewy Brownies so my little one with with dairy allergies can enjoy them too)
  • Cream cheese icing (I use Pillsbury Cream Cheese icing, again, no dairy)
  • Resealable bag, with a corner snipped off
  • Butter knife

And here are the easy steps:

  • Bake your brownies as directed.
  • Allow them to cool completely.
  • Cut out football shapes with a butter knife, keeping them fairly close together so that you can limit waste (like there would be waste!).
  • Place on your serving platter (TIP: Line platter with wax paper or food safe liner as shown so that your party finger foods come up easily)
  • Spoon icing into resealable bag, snip corner and pipe on four lines
