loving the LEGO YouTube Channel

LEGO video playlist

Anyone else have a LEGO® obsessed kiddo… or two… living with them?! You’re going to love the new LEGO® video channel on youtube. It is amazing and kid-safe! (And if you may want to checkout my son’s eighth birthday LEGO® party too.)

So our school is 30 minutes away… I know what you’re thinking and I think it almost every morning. BUT, it’s a fabulous school and I’m committed to my kiddos getting a great education. Anyhoo, we have a long drive back and forth each day. Many mornings we’re reviewing spelling words or taking a few timed math quizzes (some great apps out there), but the afternoons are different. My boys want to unwind and be entertained.

Those are the times when our new LEGO® playlist on YouTube is going to come in! When the boys were making their playlists they laughed so hard and so loud they made me giggle.

Lego-City-Collage-615

My oldest is really into LEGO® City right now so he’s all about the LEGO® City videos. I have to admit, the robbers are hilarious.

And a very cool side-effect of the videos, my sons were inspired to build a few of the things they saw.

Create a Lego Video Playlist

Just follow these steps and you can create your own LEGO® video playlist from over 500 videos that your kids… or you {grin}… can watch from anywhere: in the car, at an airport, waiting in line at the craft store (they hate that), around the house, etc.

And do you see that last building block point in the picture, “Build Playlists using only LEGO® videos, to keep non-LEGO content from being recommended during playback.” As a mom of two LEGO® loving boys, this part is critical. My guys are 8 and 6 and some of the things that others create and place on YouTube are just not appropriate. But with the real LEGO® team, your kids are safe and giggling.

Here’s a link to our LEGO® video playlist to help get you started!

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate! Happy Sunday everyone!

8 party ideas for the Big Game + win!

The Big Game AND your party are only a few short weeks away! And I’ve got your back ladies! This morning I’m sharing 8 fun, easy and stylish ideas to make your football party table more than just the halftime show. Yep, no flag on the field here! {grin}

Let’s start with the football party snack table set-up. I grabbed many of these fun football party supplies at World Market, a store you can always count on for gourmet foods and beverages with unique flavors and origins.

My absolute favorite find for this football party is my backdrop, a weathered map of the United States. It will be perfect not only for the Big Game, but for all my football parties (or any sport for that matter) throughout the year.

I made this little pennant banner that I can move between states as different teams play! By the way, the pennant colors will be updated for this year’s Big Game once the final teams are announced. More details below! And if you want to make your own pennant, I’m going to post the easy how tos later this week.

My hubby thought the Beers of the World were a must!

And of course I had to have a cupcake or two… well I mean, of course right! You can download my free Game Day cupcake templates in 2013 colors here.

The boys had to have their pick too. Football shaped pretzels and Artichoke and Spinach Chips. And yes, kids do love them!

Want to recreate part or all of this table for your football party? Here are my resources:

  • Backdrop – map of the United States from World Market
  • Tablecloth – green indoor outdoor carpeting from your local hardware store
  • Serving items – blue lunch bags from your local grocery, popcorn containers from World Market
  • Pre-made snacks – UTZ football shaped pretzels and Jensen’s Orchard Spinach and Artichoke Chips from World Market
  • Beverages – Beers of the World from World Market
  • Serving dishes - 3-tier cupcake and mini pizza display from World Market
  • Food labels – chalkboard placecards and food labels from World Market
  • Free printable party supplies – cupcake wrappers, cupcake picks and pennant banner are my designs, The Celebration Shoppe, and the colors have been updated for the 2013 Big Game (updated each year). Download your Game Day templates now. Don’t want to miss any free templates, sign up for our e-mails.

I also made a few recipes for my Big Game party table. The first, and likely my favorite food item on the table, is Chocolate Bacon Popcorn. Yep, you read me right. World Market sells Bacon Salt and it gave me this inspiration for this little sweet and salty treat. Your guests, especially the guys, will love it!

To make Chocolate Bacon Popcorn you’ll need:

  • 6 cups of air popped popcorn
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate melts (available at your local grocery or craft store with a baking section)
  • J&D’s Bacon Salt
  • Wax paper

And the simple steps for Chocolate Bacon Popcorn:

  • Spread your popcorn on the wax paper (you’ll likely need to do this in 2-3 batches)
  • Place your chocolate melts in a resealable plastic bag (snipped on one end) or in a small glass bowl and heat in the microwave in 8 second intervals, three times, or until melted
  • Drizzle chocolate over popcorn
  • Before chocolate cools, shake on J&D’s Bacon Salt to your desired taste.

I also made mini pizzas, a favorite of our family since I was a kid. We typically use pumpernickel bread, but I found these yummy Minigrill Mini Toasts at World Market and they turned out perfectly.

To make Mini Toast Party Pizzas you’ll need:

  • Ground beef, cooked and strained
  • Ground sausage, cooked and strained
  • Original pizza sauce
  • Cheddar, Sharp and Mozzarella and Provolone blended
  • Minigrill Mini Toasts from World Market

And the simple how to steps for Mini Toast Party Pizza:

  • Blend your cooked meats and pizza sauce in a pan and bring to a simmer
  • Add a small amount of your cheese mixture allowing it to melt
  • Top mini toasts with mixture
  • Drizzle remaining cheese on top

Would you be interested in winning the Ultimate Football Viewing Party?! Well World Market wants to give you that chance with a $500 gift card! Just join World Market on facebook and fill out a quick entry form for a chance to win one of ten $500 gift cards. Contest runs through January 25, 2013. Join Cost Plus World Market on facebook now!

By the way, World Market isn’t just great for celebrations. They have a wonderful array of ideas and products for decorating your home. I personally want some of their whimsical white wall frames for my studio makeover, but they have furniture, including chairs and sofas (there was one gray number that would be beautiful in my living room!), end tables, and on and on. If you’re looking to freshen up your home for the new year, you should absolutely give World Market a browse!

kid craft: red bird handprint art

My boys crafted red bird handprint art canvases for their grandmothers this Christmas. Aren’t they fun?! The perfect kid art activity!

And you should have heard the responses. What mom, grandmother, dad, grandpa doesn’t want handprint art gifts from their little ones? Well none in my family and I’m obsessed a bit with capturing their little hands anyway before they get any bigger.

Just imagine your little person’s hand smothered in paint… okay and maybe their little bottoms buckled to the chair {smirk}… but the outcome is adorable.

My mom’s absolute favorite is the cardinal bird. Here in Ohio I see them everyday in my backyard. Such beautiful birds!

But you know, these handprint red birds (or any color) would be perfect for kid crafted Mother’s Day gifts too… just saying!

By the way, I did so many crafts over the holidays that I really wanted to share and just ran out of time. So if you see a Christmas craft here in July don’t judge…

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own red bird handprint art canvases:

  • Kids… it’s just not as cute if it’s your hand. {grin}
  • White canvas (you can get a 8×10 for about $7 at your local craft store)
  • Paint colors: red, brown, black, yellow and silver (if you want snowflakes)
  • Paint brushes
  • Optional: Martha Stewart Snowflake Punch to make a stencil

Easy how to steps to make your own red bird handprint art:

  • Paint your child’s hand with red paint, making sure to get in any creases.
  • Apply to canvas quickly, lightly pushing on their hand to make sure all areas touch the canvas. (Wash little one’s hand… like you need me to tell you!)
  • Using black, let your child paint on legs and a dot for the eye.
  • Using brown, let your child paint whispy tree branches.
  • Using yellow, let your child paint a triangle for the beak.
  • Using silver, let your child stencil on a snowflake using the template you made from the punch.
  • Sign it! Let your kiddos write their name at the end of the wing tip and don’t forget the year.
  •  Tip: Let the canvas dry a few minutes in between each color/application if your child’s hand might brush wet paint. The canvas isn’t very forgiving.

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

LEGO building birthday party

For my oldest son’s birthday we went to Florida this year. It was fabulous. Five days of white sand and ocean breezes… heaven.

And although we had cake, sang Happy Birthday and played for days, it still wasn’t a party with his friends. So, this past weekend, a month-and-a-half later, we had a small LEGO birthday party at a local Bricks 4 Kids.

I don’t generally do parties away from our home simply because I like to have complete control of all the details. And we all know that “play place” parties generally rush you in and out of the “cake room” in 15 minutes. But this is really what my little guy wanted so I set all my wishes aside and made it happen! I didn’t design a new collection. I didn’t break out all the bells and whistles, but I did ask my friends at Sweet Tooth Cottage to make some fabulous LEGO shaped cookies and they of course didn’t disappoint. (They’ll be coming to the shoppe in a couple of days!)

We had a small table for cake, cookies, favors and beverages and tons of space for building LEGOS. And wow were there tons of LEGOS. The walls were lined with them, plus we had a “teacher” to show them how to build dragsters and to lead them in games!

These are just a few shots of all the fun the kids had. They built swords for a balloon relay race, they raced for LEGOS with spoons to build the best airplane and more. It was very loud for a LEGO party. {grin}

Happy 8th birthday to my sweet boy!

As always, we hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

Alice in Wonderland tea party

Good morning everyone! My name is Jen of Passion for Parties and I’m guest posting this morning to share my niece’s Alice In Wonderland Tea Party.

I have to admit, when she told me she wanted her birthday party to be Alice in Wonderland, I wasn’t super excited! I’m more drawn to original, unique themes. So I knew that to pull this off in a way that I’d be happy with, I was going to have to get creative.

I sketched out some ideas, enlisted the help of my party elves (my hubby, mom, and sister), and got to work! In the end, this turned out to be one of my most favorite parties ever!

Here’s a peek at what we did:

Our invitations featured a simple silhouette of Alice in purple(the birthday girl’s favorite color). A pretty pink blossom border was embellished with glitter to add a touch of “wonder” to our Wonderland invites. Each envelope was secured with baker’s twine, then topped with a handmade, whimsical butterfly for a fun touch.

Our homemade “arbor” took center stage for the party. We used PVC pipe, deck post finials (painted white), and e600 glue to create a gorgeous enclosure for our tea party table.

Streamers created the outline for the frame, while curling ribbon was strung from post to post and was used to hang colorful party lanterns over the table.

The table, in itself, was one of the most talked-about aspects of the party.

The DIY centerpiece was like something straight out of Wonderland. Bright tissue paper flowers rested on mossy grass, while marshmallow flower cupcakes grew on stem pedestals, surrounded by dancing paper butterflies.

Each place setting was adorned with colorful paisley plates and topped with homemade tea cups filled with marshmallows. Colorful goblets completed the look.

The food table was filled with tea party goodies. Finger sandwiches, “Queen of Hearts” raspberry tarts, flower veggie bouquets and a teapot watermelon were some of the favorites.

Our cake was simple, yet beautiful, with a pretty flower bouquet as a topper. The cupcakes were adorned with our Alice in Wonderland party toppers that coordinated nicely with our “Merry Birthday” banner that was displayed on the backdrop.

Since the rabbit shouting “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date” is what started Alice’s adventure into Wonderland, we turned that into a game. We secured pictures of the rabbit onto hand-painted root beer bottles, and hand-wrapped embroidery hoops to use as rings. The kiddos had to toss the rings to try to “capture the rabbit” and find out what he was late for.

“Pin the Heart on the Queen” was another game the kids enjoyed.

The biggest hit for the kids was the dress-up station. Our birthday girl was dressed in a beautiful Alice dress, so we wanted the other kiddos to feel like they were in Wonderland, too!

A Mad Hatter hat, rabbit ears and tails, a Cheshire cat mask (I just painted a black cat mask with pink and purple), a cat tail, a bow tie, silly glasses, and a tea party mini hat headband were displayed on a white bedside table, alongside a mirror for the kids to see themselves all dressed up.

They just LOVED this, and wore the dress-up items throughout the entire party!

To showcase these fun dress-up moments, the kids each decorated a picture frame to take home as a party favor. Photos of themselves all dressed up were sent with the thank you notes to be framed in the frames they made.

The kids also got to take home the marshmallow cupcakes from the table centerpiece, that were tucked inside individual cupcake boxes and adorned with our custom favor tags.

Other favors included DIY Wonderland gumball flowers, and prizes that the kids won during all of the activities that they played.

As always, we hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and CELEBRATE!

DIY Frankenstein coin wrapper favors

Excited to have Jen of Passion for Parties guest posting this morning and sharing her adorable Frankenstein coin wrapper party favors, perfect Halloween kids craft and so inexpensive to make!

~~~~
Good morning everyone! Here’s what you’ll need for this easy craft:
  • Coin wrappers for quarters (I bought an entire bag of wrappers at the dollar store)
  • One-inch gumballs (in a pretzel cello bag) or other wrapped candies
  • Black duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Black crepe paper
  • Black cardstock
  • Double-sided tape
  • Hot glue
  • Google eyes
  • Black and red sharpies
And here are the easy DIY how tos:
  1. Stuff the coin wrappers with gumballs in food safe pretzel cello bags, or other prepackaged candies, as you would with coins, folding over the edges to secure.
  2. Cut a piece of duct tape large enough to cover the opening of the wrapper and fold down the sides a bit.
  3. Rest the tape on top of one end of the wrapper.
  4. Use scissor to cut slits in the tape, then fold the edges down and secure.
  5. Measure and cut a piece of green paper long enough and wide enough to fit around the coin wrapper.
  6. Use double-sided tape to secure it in place.
  7. Measure and cut a piece of crepe paper long enough to wrap around the top edge of the coin wrapper.
  8. Cut the crepe paper in half lengthwise, then cut triangular snips out of the paper to create hair.
  9. Use double-sided tape to secure the crepe paper around the tape-wrapped edge of the coin wrapper.
  10. Use scissors or a large heart-shaped paper punch to make a 2 to 2 ½ inch heart out of black cardstock.
  11. Fold the tip of the heart over about ¼ of an inch, then secure it to the back of the coin wrapper with a dot of hot glue to serve as “feet.”
  12. Attach the google eyes to the face of your Frankenstein, then use the sharpies to add accents like eyebrows, a mouth, and stitches.
 Thanks so much for having me Kim!
basketball birthday bash
When Paula from Party Like Paula sent us her son, Jake’s, Basketball Birthday Bash, I knew it was a slam dunk! {wink} She did a fabulous job transforming this classic basketball theme (Jake’s favorite sport, of course!) into a party with some punch.
From the strikingly simple color palette of black and white referee stripes with basketball orange, to the scoreboard backdrop over the dessert table, Paula scores big with the little touches that make a big impact. My absolute favorite item, though, is the DIY basketball dessert stands she crafted using mini basketballs and frisbees!
Other note-worthy party details include a fun DIY door wreath, balloon pillars, basketball centerpiece… all items you’ll want to bounce on over to Party Like Paula to see!
Happy Birthday, Jake!
