football kickoff party

I can’t believe that summer is winding down and it’s almost football season. (My hubby is beyond excited…) So in honor of this American passtime, I thought I would throw {giggle} a little inspiration your way.

First, I love the simplicity of the football cupcake. The grass is just a Wilton grass tip (#233) and the football is just a #3 or #4 tip. (Use freezer weight resealable bags with connectors for easy cleanup.)

And the centerpiece is a very smart idea from InStyle Magazine’s InStyle Parties.  It’s just a flat of wheatgrass, which you can find at your local florist, and miniture plastic football players and goal posts. (My boys have a set!)

ready, set, go! cakes

I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to the development of new birthday party themes and in doing so I browse the web for inspiration. I’m not saying that we’re going to develop a theme for you race fans out there… just yet anyway… but I thought you would still enjoy a little sweet inspiration. Here are my favorite race car cakes and cupcakes.

I love that this one from LynnInTokyo because it cuts out significant fondant work by using toys. (I just suggest washing them well before setting them on your cake. Brand new doesn’t mean clean!)

This one from Treasures and Tiaras uses such wonderful colors. The red, black and white combo cupcakes make a great centerpiece.

And last, but not least, I really liked that this one from Ratutek used cupcakes to make a track. Although the cars are fondant, the grass is easily accomplished with the right icing tip and the track is just black and white icing.

M&M baseball cupcakes

Written on May 8th, 2009 by Kim

baseball_brightideasThis idea is from BrightIdeas.com and I simply love it! It is so easy; I only wish I knew where they got the cupcake liners. No fear though. If you can’t locate something similar I would go with a white baking liner (use a white cake mix and egg whites… and maybe substitute apple sauce for the oil to keep the liners crisp) and red and white grosgrain ribbon.

Here’s all you need:

  • 1 box (18.25 oz.) yellow cake mix
  • 2 cups chopped MILKY WAY® Bars
  • 2 12-oz. cans whipped vanilla frosting
  • 3 cups M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies
  • 2 12-cup muffin tins
  • Paper cupcake liners
  • And here are the simple steps:

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
    2. Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the package. Fold the MILKY WAY® Bars into the batter.
    3. Line the muffin tins and fill. Bake for 20 minutes. Cool completely before spreading with whipped frosting.
    4. Following the photograph, decorate the cupcakes with single color M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies to create the baseball seams.

    soccer ball cupcakes

Written on April 15th, 2009 by Kim

soccercupcakes_widrigI found these on about.com submitted from baker, Johanna Widrig, and wanted to share. The cupcake itself is not difficult, it’s making the fondant soccer ball that might take a little time and okay… some patience. But you have to agree that the outcome is awesome. Plus, your guests can just lift off the ball and eat the yummy cupcake!

A tip on the ball, you can buy boxes of pre-made fondant at your craft store. Roll your balls by hand. Then, tint some black with gel food coloring (the other is water-based and won’t do as well). Roll out the black and cut out your shapes with an exactor knife. If you have to use a kitchen knife make sure it isn’t serrated. Now apply your black shapes with a touch of icing and connect them with a black cake writing pen.

Here’s what the baker, Johanna, had to say. “These are just a few of the soccer ball cupcakes I created for an 11 year old soccer fan’s birthday. I did both vanilla and chocolate, with butter cream icing using a Wilton grass tip. I made the soccer balls by hand using fondant. They were a labor of love, but the end result was exactly what I was hoping to create!”

    batter up baseball cupcakes

Written on February 10th, 2009 by Kim

baseball_cupcakesOkay, so I’m loving KraftFoods.com this week, but I had to share this idea too. These are super easy and a great addition to any baseball themed birthday. Or, better yet, just a great treat to take to the ball field this spring.

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    • 1 pkg. white cake mix (and required additional ingredients)
    • 10 OREO Cookies, crushed
    • 2 cups thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping or can white icing
    • Tube red decorating gel
    • White muffin cups

And here’s how you make it:

    1. Prepare the cake batter as directed on the package and stir in cookie crumbs; spoon evenly into 24 paper-lined medium muffin cups. (NOTE: To make these egg and dairy free, use puree apricots, two halves to one egg, in the place of the egg and ice with dairy free can frosting.)
    2. Bake and allow cupcakes to cool completely.
    3. Frost cupcakes with the whipped topping (requires storing the finished cupcake in the refrigerator). Or, if you decide to use regular icing, heat it in 15 second intervals in a glass bowl in the microwave and dip your cupcakes allowing the excess icing to drip off before setting them aside to cool. Use the decorating gel to draw stitching lines on top of each cupcake to resemble a baseball.
