the why

Written on June 23rd, 2008 by Kim

There are actually a multitude of why. Wanting to live a little bit more by my own rules, wanting to enjoy my days more than I was in corporate America, wanting to build something from the ground up, wanting to take a chance, wanting to spend more time with my children (but don’t let this be your main driver because at least in the beginning, this is not the case; you will work harder than you ever have).

Anyone can do it. Many say you need a true passion, something you really enjoy. And those people couldn’t be more right. You also need a strong support group: family, spouse or just a great friend. You’ll need these people to talk you off the ledge every other day or so. And of course you need a solid budget to get your idea moving and to support you while you focus.

Me, I’ve been planning financially for this for years, plus I have a supportive husband. I also read a ton of books when trying to muster the courage to take this plunge. There were several, but two that I found particularly helpful were Mommy Millionaire by Kim Lavine (it reads like a novel and has a lot of no-nonsense advice, as well as a few cliffhangers) and The Martha Rules by Martha Stewart (this one is for more practical advice about the staples you need to think through and execute on, a lot of what I learned while getting my MBA, but a great refresher). You can’t go wrong with either one of these.

We’re physically located just outside of Columbus, Ohio, but in August you can find our shoppe at the very url that you’re visiting now. And if you forget next time and leave off the “the” and just type celebrationshoppe.com or if you leave off the “pe” in shop (a very good girlfriend of mine thought it was a better name) and type celebrationshop.com… they all get you to the same place. I hope you’ll visit often and share us with your friends.

We’re working feverishly creating new invitations, purchasing inventory and designing our new store front for our grand opening in early August. And, we’ve scheduled the first of four photo shoots for next Tuesday. I can’t wait to share some of the first images with you.

Pirate Ship InvitationFocusing on custom invitations and creative table décor, The Celebration Shoppe will offer not only fun ideas for child birthdays and seasonal parties, but also for girlfriend gatherings (where a glass of wine can be involved), holidays and even the everyday. Let’s face it, we don’t always need a formal invitation for a cool BBQ in the backyard or a coordinated table during our next bookclub. The Celebration Shoppe will offer everything from centerpieces (that can be repurposed into your child’s bedroom décor or a toy for them to enjoy) to high end paper goods for easy cleanup to cloth table accessories for holidays and events we will celebrate more than once.

And just so we’re on the same page, if you’re looking for Dora or Hanna Montana, I can give you some great resources, but you won’t find them here. All invitations are custom designs and personalized to your event. Here’s a preview of our pirate ship birthday invitation; I would love your thoughts!
