How To Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Want a little inexpensive summer fun for the kiddos?! For the Summer Issue of All You magazine I contributed an article sharing How To Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint.

It’s super easy to whip up and cleans up easily with rain or the hose!

The recipe is a 1 to 1 ratio, but for simplicity we’ll use 1 cup. You’ll need:

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • food coloring (pastels are achieved with a drop or two, primary colors will need 5 or 6 drops)
  • plastic bowls or cups
  • paint brushes

Mix cornstarch and water together until smooth. Divide and add food coloring until you reach your desired colors.

It’s that simple and it cleans up in a snap! So let your little Picassos go and have a bit of summer fun!

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!

Kid Craft: Footprint Manger Scene {DIY Tutorial}

Our faith holds first place in our house at Christmas time and I love reminding my children in the mix of all the excitement what this season really means.

Footprint Manger Art with TheCelebrationShoppe.com

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #StaplesSharpie http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO.

I warn you… the painting of the feet is ticklish so you may want to place a towel… or two… down. I warned my boys and they still flopped all over the place. {grin} In the end, it was so worth it to have their little (or not so little anymore) feet cradling their version of the baby Jesus.

To make your own Footprint Manger Scene, you’ll need:

  • Square white canvas
  • Sharpies – 12 ct. multipack, 4 ct. metallic assortment and either the silver or gold 4 pack (I LOVE them all and they’re all on sale at Staples right now!)
  • Brown craft paint for foot
  • Pearl white craft paint for head (we chose to stamp his head on with a finger but there are light Sharpies in the pack)
  • Paint brush
  • Optional: white Kraft paper

And now for the easy kid crafting steps:

Footprint – paint your child’s foot liberally with brown paint and then press evenly to the center lower portion of the white canvas. Allow to dry completely.

Prep and practice – since canvas is unforgiving, I put white paper (available in rolls like gift wrap) out under the canvases so my kids could practice what they’re planning to draw before they put Sharpie to canvas. You can see in the top image my youngest practicing his stars. {wink}

Draw – then just let them go! You can see from the side-by-side shot below that our manger scenes are slightly different, but in my mind that is what makes them that much more precious.

Artist signature – and don’t forget to let them sign their art. We like to date ours too!

Staples has all the Sharpies for your holiday needs! I mean $6 for a 12 ct Multi Colored pack of Sharpies! Woo Hoo! And the Sharpie Metallic Assorted 4-CT pack, including the Silver pack and the Gold pack are only $5. I’m personally a bit obsessed with all my Sharpie colors, but the metallic are my new favorites!

Thanksgiving Kids Table: Modern Black, Orange and Mint Color Palette

Hosting Thanksgiving this year? In need of some amazing Thanksgiving Kids Table ideas?! I’m giddy to share this amazing table and creative activity ideas from my friend Dawn of Not Just A Mommy. I’m not sure what I love more, the darling table backdrop or the log cabin activity!

Hello everyone! This is Dawn from Not Just A Mommy and I’m thrilled to be sharing my modern take on a kids’ table for Thanksgiving.  Don’t feel you have to limit your decor to turkeys or a red, brown and orange palette.  I’m always looking for new twists to freshen my holiday tables.

Inspired by my woodland creatures napkins, I played with houndstooth, gold, orange and mint for a fun table that will keep the little ones out of the kitchen and your hair.

To set the scene, I started with Caravan’s Chalk It Up Dining Set Give Thanks poster, tissue decorations and paper rosettes. I love this set because it comes with 3 posters, stickers and placemats for $5.  I took the pdf to Staples and they printed the poster as an engineering print for less than $4!

One of my favorite ways to cover a table is with wrapping paper.  Not only are they a perfect starting point for decorating your table, it’s easy cleanup when the party’s over. To keep a formal but fun feel and break up the strong pattern of the houndstooth, I layered with gold paper.  Psst…I found the houndstooth paper at Hobby Lobby.

Gingerbread house decorating isn’t just for Christmas.  When I saw The Candy Cottage featured in Family Fun, I knew I must have them. They are a no-bake solution for those of us who don’t have the time or skills to bake our own. They are reusable, which means the fun can happen all year round. What better way to keep the kids busy than with making log cabins.

What do you make log cabins with? Why with mini pretzels and rods of course. With wafers and fun candy accents, your little guests will be busy for awhile…

Ta-da! This took me awhile to frost and lay all the pretzels so I know it will keep my boys busy before our own Thanksgiving dinner.  And note, I scored all the pretzels at Dollar Tree, they can be pricey at grocery stores.

Place settings are more fun tied with grosgrain ribbon and a paper straw.  I love wood utensils, my favorite place to score them…Garnish. I also purchased my birch paper straws there.

If they promise to eat their veggies, they can have their cupcake! I found these great wrappers at Bake It Pretty.  Even if your cupcakes are store-bought, place them wrapped into a pretty liner that matches your theme.  No one will know you didn’t bake them yourself.

I always try to balance out the sweets with something healthy and a cake stand of easy-to-peel mandarins are both colorful and practical.

A few toy animals round out our table decorations; not only will they be played with but can go home with guests. I know…what does the fox say?

I hope you have been inspired to think a little outside of the holiday box when it comes to decor and activities this Thanksgiving. Don’t be afraid to play around with non-traditional colors, decor and foods. In fact, check out my Modern Thanksgiving post for great ideas like veggie centerpieces and Mason Jar Pumpkin Cheesecake Trifles.
