My oldest wanted our deep blue sea birthday invitation and decor for his fifth birthday, but with one special addition… sharks! {wink} With that in mind, I made these super fun shark, life preserver, harbor marker and cork cupcakes from the Hello! Cupcake book (with a few modifications). He loved them and so will your little people.

For the sharks you’ll need:

  • Twinkies
  • Red fruit leather
  • Small chocolate drops
  • Oreo cookies
  • Icing
  • Resealable bag
  • #4 icing tip (for teeth) and connector
  • Silicone brush

Here are the simple steps:

  1. Lay the Twinkie on its side and trim about an inch (at an angle) off of the bottom so that the shark will appear as if its popping out of the cupcake.
  2. Next trim a slight “V” shape in the other end of the Twinkie.
  3. Twist a Oreo in half and remove the white filling. Cut the cookie in half and cut a small slit in the back of your Twinkie. Insert the cookie half.
  4. Insert a spoonful of icing into a resealable bag and set aside. Divide the remaining icing and tint half a dark ocean blue for the water and the other half a light blue or gray for your shark.
  5. Ice your water onto your cupcake and set aside.
  6. Place your Twinkie on your cupcake and freeze it for at least 20 minutes.
  7. Trim your fruit leather in an oval shape about an inch-and-a-half long and set aside.
  8. Heat your shark icing in 15 second intervals until smooth.
  9. Remove your sharks from the freezer and paint them with the melted icing and silicone brush until completely covered. Allow the excess frosting to drip off.
  10. Before the shark dries completely, apply the red fruit leather to the front of your shark.
  11. To finish it off, using the #4 tip, pipe white teeth all around the fruit leather and use the small chocolate drops as the beady little eyes.

For the cork bobbers, you’ll need two gumdrops and half of a lollipop stick. Make sure you pierce the gumdrops so that the sharp end of the bobber inserts into the cupcake.

For the harbor markers, you’ll need colored ice cream cones, sprinkes, suckers, a light spray of PAM and white icing. Just lightly, very lightly, spray the cone and quickly sprinkle them. Next insert the sucker in the top and pipe on a number (using the #4 tip again is fine).

And finally, for the life preservers, just use round gum drop candies and pipe with white icing using the flat side of a #46 tip.

Enjoy!
